International Machiavelli Society News: Inaugural Conference and New Speaker’s Series (posted 3/23/2021)
Dear Colleagues,
We hope this message finds you safe and well. As you are aware, the disruptions of the past year forced us to postpone the inaugural December 2020 meeting of the International Machiavelli Society. Given the slowness of the vaccine rollout in North America and Europe we have some doubts that travel will return to normal by December 2021, so we are currently planning for 2022 for the inaugural conference in Rome (it has to be seen whether in June or December). There are currently no plans to conduct the conference by Zoom.
If your abstract was accepted for the inaugural conference, we will write to you within the year to find out if you want to modify it or change the theme of your paper. In due course, we will also circulate another call for papers intended for those who, having missed the first call, wish to participate in the conference as speakers.
Since at this point the conference is still a long way off, we intend to bridge that time with an online speaker’s series. Each will feature a noted scholar in the field of Machiavelli studies speaking on a topic of their choosing.
We are delighted to announce our speaker for the first colloquium will be Harvey Mansfield, William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Government at Harvard’s Kennedy School. He will be speaking by Zoom on the subject of “Machiavelli and verità effettuale,”on April 19th, 2021 at 11am EST (5pm Italy).
Preceding the talk, there will be a brief virtual ceremony where Professor Gennaro Sasso (Accademia dei Lincei e Università La Sapienza, Roma) will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for his considerable contributions to the field of Machiavelli studies.
A second lecture will be held on May 12th 2021 at 11am EST (5pm EST) by Alison Brown (Professor Emeritus at Royal Holloway, University of London). More details to follow.

Ci auguriamo stiate bene in questi tempi difficili.
Come sapete, i disagi dell’ultimo anno ci hanno obbligato a posticipare il convegno inaugurale della International Machiavelli Society. Data inoltre la lentezza delle vaccinazioni in Nord America e in Europa, dubitiamo che i viaggi possano tornare alla normalità entro il dicembre di quest’anno e per questo abbiamo deciso di postporre il convegno al 2022 (vedremo più avanti se a giugno o a dicembre). Al momento non prevediamo che il convegno si tenga in formato virtuale.
Se il vostro abstract era stato accettato per il convegno inaugurale, entro l’anno vi scriveremo per sapere se volete modificarlo o cambiare il tema del vostro paper. A tempo debito, faremo anche circolare un’altra call for papers destinata a quanti, avendo perso la prima, volessero participare al convegno come relatori.
Dato, però, che al convegno manca ancora molto tempo, abbiamo intanto pensato di organizzare una serie di lectures virtuali con importanti studiosi di Machiavelli che parleranno su temi a loro scelta. Siamo dunque molto lieti di annunciare che il 19 aprile 2021 alle 17 (ora italiana) il nostro primo ospite sarà Harvey Mansfield, William R. Kenan Jr, Professor of Government presso la Harvard University chi parlerà su tema di “Machiavelli e la verità effettuale”: i dettagli seguiranno a breve. Prima della conferenza del prof. Mansfield, si terrà una breve cerimonia virtuale durante la quale il Professor Gennaro Sasso (Accademia dei Lincei e Università La Sapienza, Roma) riceverà il Lifetime Achievement Award della International Machiavelli Society per il suo importante contributo agli studi su Machiavelli.
Il giorno 12 maggio 2021 (alle 17, ora italiana), seguirà poi una seconda lecture, tenuta da Alison Brown (Professoressa emerita presso la Royal Holloway, University of London).
Vi aspettiamo pertanto per queste due conferenze virtuali.
